[NI03123] This may be the Ida Covert married to Frank Covert in the 1900 census for Belmont Co OH, Pultney Twp, Bellaire, Roll 1241 Book 2 p. 63a. Frank was born in Ohio Feb 1864, Ida was born in West Virginia Nov 1870 and they've been married 5 years, no children. It's possible Frank died or they were divorced.

[NI03217] Phineas Lilley's son-in-law Martin L. May was a witness to the will of Martin Lillie of Boylston, Oswego County, NY, on 30 Sept. 1865; Martin was then 75 years old. Martin's will was entered on 28 Oct. 1872. Phineas Lilley and Martin Lilley were second cousins. (Lilley GenForum)

[NI03224] About 1808, John Montgomery and Susannah Lillie settled in Roxborough Twp, Stormont County, Ontario. They were among the earliest settlers in this township. Here, they raised a family of 12 children.
John Montgomery came to Canada from the Mohawk Valley around 1800. The obituary for Eliza Eleanor Begg, daughter of John and Susannah Montgomery, stated that her parents emigrated from the Mohawk valley in the State of New York early in the century and settled in the 1st concession of Roxborough. Where in the Mohawk Valley did the Montgomery family reside? There are two possibilities: Amsterdam, N.Y. and/or Albany, N.Y.
Bible records show that John Montgomery was born on 6 Nov 1784. Both the date and place of his birth were mentioned in the obituary of his youngest son, James Nelson Montgomery. The following obituary was recorded in the Sleepy Eye Herald in 1896.
"The late James Nelson Montgomery came from old Revolutionary Stock, his ancestors on both sides were old New England settlers and took part in the American Independence. His father, John Montgomery, was born in Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York. His mother was born in Rutland, Vermont the same year. The Montgomery family can trace their ancestors back 200 years."
It appears that this knowledge of the early ancestors has been lost. I searched the Montgomery County records at Fonda, New York, but was unable to locate a baptism record for John Montgomery. I also searched the church records at the N.Y. state library at Albany. Many of the church records in the Mohawk Valley were burned during the U.S. Revolutionary War. Perhaps, this record was torched? I also checked the land records and census records prior to 1800 for the Montgomery families in the Mohawk Valley. There were Montgomery families in the Mohawk Valley but I could not connect John Montgomery to any of these families.

... There is one land record for Lot C, Concession 1 of Roxborough Twp that suggests that the Montgomery family may have originated from Albany, N.Y. The land is transferred by a Deed Poll (#422, Stormont County Land Office) from William Montgomery to John Montgomery. The deed, dated 19 Feb, 1818, refers to "William Montgomery of the County of Albany in the State of New York now of Cornwall." I believe that this William Montgomery is the father of John Montgomery.
Written evidence of the early Montgomery records (prior to 1800) has yet to be uncovered. Verbal testaments that have been passed down over several generations suggest that the Montgomerys crossed a lake in winter on the way to Canada from the Mohawk Valley. A team of horses broke through the ice. One horse drowned but the other one was saved. One daughter died on the journey to Canada.
Where did John Montgomery first settle in Upper Canada? Where did he meet Susannah Lillie? About 1800, Susannah Lillie, moved with her parents, brothers and sisters from Rutland, Vermont to Bastard Township, Leeds County, Ontario. Early census records for Elizabethtown (Brockville) in Leeds County, Ontario listed a John Montgomery in 1800, 1801, and 1803. There was no listing for this name in 1804, which may mean that he has moved elsewhere. In the 1800 census, John was listed with a group of single men. It appeared that he was a labourer in the Maitland area which was a boat-building area. John was listed alone in the 1801 and 1803 census.
John Montgomery and Susannah Lillie were married on the 25th of February, 1805 by Rev. John Bethune at St. Andrew's Church in Williamstown, Ontario. Susannah was baptized by Rev. Bethune in Williamstown, Ontario. This record revealed that they were living in Cornwall, Ontario.
"Susannah Montgomery, wife of John Montgomery of Cornwall, Daughter of Turner Lilly and Eleanor Churchill of the State of New York was baptized on the 25th Augt, 1805, aged 20 years" (Public Archives of Canada, film #C-3030, entry #1236 on p. 127)
The distance between Elizabethtown and Cornwall is 60 miles. Why would John Montgomery and Susannah Lillie get married in Cornwall when her family was in Leeds County? Since Susannah's father, Turner Lillie, died in 1801, this may have been one factor. I believe that John Montgomery's parents resided in Cornwall, so this may have been another factor.

... John Montgomery was stabbed in Martintown at high noon by an Italian peddler who was selling trinkets. He died on 15 January 1847. It could be a coincidence that his will was made two days prior to his death. However, it is more probable that after he was stabbed in Martintown, he realized that he did not have long to live, then made out his will. A posse was assembled by the Montgomery boys to catch the peddler. It is told that the peddler was caught along the King's Road near Martintown and pinned to a tree using bayonets until the arrival of the sheriff. Family stories reveal that the Montgomery boys wanted to hang the peddler for immediate justice. I was told that there was a trial in Cornwall. The Italian did not understand a word of the proceedings since he did not speak English. I have been unable to locate a trial in the records for the Eastern District of Upper Canada. The peddler was probably hung without a trial.
In his will, John Montgomery left a farm to each of his seven sons. He also made provisions for his wife, Susannah. There was no mention of his five daughters in the will.

[NI03323] ... for upon his arrival there he with others from over the state--principally from Windham, Norfolk, Norwich, Plainfield and Montville were formed into an "Independent and Ranging Company," at Roxbury, with Peter Perrett, of Milford, as captain, and Joshua Chapel,--probably of Norwich,--and Moses Cleveland, of Canterbury, as lieutenants, and Ebenezer Hibbard, of Windham, as ensign. This company was engaged in reconnoitering around Boston. [Ancestors and Descendants of Captain Israel Jones, p. 243, GenealogyLibrary]

Chester ran a chair shop in Kennedy NY in 1835. This is recorded in the history book of Chautauqua Co NY. He and his family left to go to Michigan by covered wagon in 1850. One of their daughters was riding with another family and the two families became separated in Ohio. Chester and Fannie stayed in Ohio for over a year hoping the other family would return with their daughter, but after that length of time and hearing no word of her, they were forced to continue their journey to Michigan. (They were reunited with her after she was grown and married.)

In Michigan, Chester made furniture. He had a lot of furniture patterns and he had a shingle mill. he was a Justice of the Peace and performed wedding ceremonies for his sons Alphonza and Marvin. Chester is buried in the Oakfield Cemetery in Oakfield Twp, Kent Co. MI. He died Aug. 16, 1885 at the age of 84. Fannie died on June 4, 1881 at the age of 80.

TRAVER AND LILLIE__Will Surrender Themselves at Cleveland Tomorrow and Go to Columbus to Begin Sentence. C. M. Traver and O. C. Lillie, president and cashier respectively of the defunct National bank of Conneaut, who were sentenced to six years' imprisonment in the Ohio penitentiary by Federal Judge Tayler a week ago last Saturday, will surrender themselves at the marshal's office tomorrow morning. They will be taken to Columbus on the noon train to begin their sentences. When Judge Tracey imposed sentence he gave them ten days to settle up their private affairs. During the past week they have made arrangements for the care of their families and today they will enjoy their last day of freedom for several years.

March 28? __ The people here are indignant that an effort will be made to secure a pardon for Lillie and Traver. They justly merit the sentence they got and why should they not pay the penalty. Only think of the suffering they have caused. So many people have lost their all through them. If they were not competent to run the affairs of the bank they ought to have chosen some other profession.

OHIO BANKERS RELEASED_____Number Made Free Saturday Includes C. M. Traver and O. C. Lillie From This City._____A number of Ohio bankers were released from the Ohio penitentiary Saturday. Among them were Chas. M. Traver and O. C. Lillie, who were arrested in this city and sentenced to six years. How do we correct this?

From the Sandy Creek News dated May 1933:
Among the pioneers who came to the town of Sandy Creek in the first few years of its settlement was Phineas Lilley, who was of Scotch parentage.
The record of the Lilley family begins with Abner Lilley, who was one of the three brothers to come from Scotland to America. He settled in Cambridge, Connecticut, and March 8, 1777 married Sybil Hale, three children, Olive, Phineas and Abner, Jr., being born to them. Abner Lilley, Sr., was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was killed near its close.
His son, Phineas Lilley, was born at Cambridge, Connecticut, November 29, 1779. He married Amy Sampson November 1, 1802, and several years afterward settled in the town of Sandy Creek, near the banks of Deer Creek. He served during the War of 1812. By occupation Phineas Lilley was a farmer and a carpenter, and he was active in the Presbyterian church which was organized here in 1817, the first church in town being built about ten years later. He later moved to the town of Richland, where he died February 2, 1855, at the age of 87. He was a resident of Sandy Creek in 1845 since his name appears on the census for that year.
Phineas Lilley had nine children, Cynthia, Abner, Levi, Oren (as spelled by the article), Dianthia, Alfred, Emily, Olive and Mary. Of these children, Alfred Emery Lilley was born May 23, 1815 in the town of Sandy Creek, where at the age of 16 he became a member of the Methodist church.
March 9, 1842 Alfred E. Lilley married Lucina Brown, daughter of Daniel and Sallie Brown, and next year purchased a farm a mile east of Pulaski where he spent the remainder of his life. His wife died March 6, 1855, leaving one son, William W. Lilley. He was drowned in Lake Ontario November 29, 1868, at the age of 23, leaving a wife and two small children, Josephine M. and William W. Lilley, Jr.
On August 27, 1857, Alfred E. Lilley married Betsey Maria Severance, who was the daughter of William and Eliza Hadley Severance and who was born in the town of Sandy Creek February 22, 1830. Their children were Rosie L., Amy E., Phineas, Dexter M., Mina A. and Mattie S. Lilley. Alfred E. Lilley died September 16, 1883, aged 68. (Lilley GenForum post by Carolyn Hastings Nicholson, whose grandmother, Dorothy Lilley Hastings, is a direct descendant of Abner Lilley, son of Phineas)

Prince & Sarah Lilley are listed on the next page (1850 PA census - Erie Co, Concord Twp (roll 777) p. 30b):
Prince Lilley, 65, farmer, b Conn., and his wife Sarah, 63, b R.I., are listed in the household of John Patterson, age 45, farmer, his wife Mary, 36, and their son John H., 14.

Currently I have Abner & Lurena twice on the database. The descendant information is under Abner son of Phineas & Amy. It is possible Abner was the son of Prince & Sarah rather than Phineas & Amy. In a conversation in June 2002, Laura says J.W. Lilley may have had it wrong, that there were two families where the children's names were very similar and a mistake was made. How do we correct this?

[NI03940] From "Commemorative Biographical Record of the Upper Wisconsin Counties: Waupaca, Portage, Wood, Marathon, Oneida, Vilas, Langlade and Shawano" by Chicago: J.H. Beers & Co. 1895

PHINEAS L. MUNGER, one of the younger and most enterprising farmers of Dayton township, Waupaca county, is the sole representative of a pioneer family of unusual prominence and influence. He was born in Dayton township January 3, 1859, son of Amos D. and Diantha (Lilley) Munger.
The Munger family gave many of its sons to the cause of religion. Dexter Munger, the father of Amos D., was a Baptist minister, whose pastorate for many years was at Attica, NY. He died at Linden, NY, his family consisting of six children--three sons and three daughters: Amos D. yielded up his life in his country's cause upon a Southern battlefield; Enos, a Baptist minister, who preached and died at Lakeland, MN; and Orrin, a Baptist minister, who died at Angelica, NY; Esther, afterward Mrs. Secrest, who died in Minnesota; Julia, who died in her young womanhood at Monson, MA; and Mary, now Mrs. Rundell of Erie county, New York.
Amos D. Munger was born in Hartford county, Conn., January 19, 1882 [1822?]. As the son of a clergyman he obtained an education somewhat better than falls to the ordinary lot of men, in the schools of Attica, NY, whither his parents removed when Amos was quite young, and in his youth he taught school. Friends of the family had migrated to Wisconsin, and in 1850 Amos D. also resolved to seek a home in the West. Coming to Racine, WI, in the autumn of that year he taught school in that thriving village during the winter of 1850-51. Becoming interested in Dayton township, Waupaca county, through a friend, Mr. Thompson, whose son had settled in that locality, he came early in the spring of 1851, to that township, where he pre-empted 160 acres of wild land (at which time land had not come into the market) in Section 6, that township, and made improvements thereon, such as breaking several acres, building a small house and barn, etc. Late in the autumn of that year (1851) he returned to Racine and taught school that winter, and early in the spring of the following year he came home to Dayton, bringing with him a team and wagon, farm implements, flour, groceries, household goods, etc. After putting in the spring crops he made a trip to the East, and at Boston, Mass., was married, June 13, 1852 to Miss Diantha Lilley, who was born in the township of Pulaski, Oswego Co., NY, September 17, 1822, daughter of Phineas and Amy (Samson) Lilley. Phineas, son of Abner Lilley, who had emigrated to Connecticut from England, was born in Tolland, Hartford Co., Conn., in 1787; he was a farmer by occupation, and lived in Oswego county, NY, to the age of ninety years. His wife, Amy Samson was born in Cheshire, Mass., in 1791, and died at Pulaski, NY, at the age of sixty years. Of their ten children Diantha, now Mrs. Munger is the sole survivor.
Diantha Lilley was well educated, and had taught school near the home of her parents in central New York, but for several years prior to her marriage she had been living with a sister at Cambridge, Mass. Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Munger started for their western home, via the lakes to Sheboygan, and thence by team via Fond du Lac and Berlin, Mrs. Munger bringing with her many supplies, which as her foresight afterward demonstrated, proved invaluable in the new land. Although the contrast from eastern plenty to western want was about as marked as it could well be during the early years of her married life, Mrs. Munger, as she expresses it, "never felt lonesome until he was taken away". Mr. Munger followed farming until the summer of 1862, when, as the war cloud grew darker and darker, he could no longer resist the patriotic call of duty, and bidding wife and child adieu he shouldered musket and marched to the scene of strife, enlisting in Company G, Twenty-first WI V. I. Scarcely two months later, October 8, 1862, he fell at Perryville, KY, and was buried on the field of battle. The bereaved widow remained for five years on the farm with her only child, Phineas L., a boy of three years at the time of his father's death. Then, in 1867, she sold the farm and removed to Waupaca to educate her son, where, except for a short time , she has since remained, building a comfortable home on Division street. For twenty-four years she has been a member of the First Baptist Church.
Phineas L. Munger was born January 3, 1859, in Dayton township. His earliest education was received in the schools of District No. 5, and later in the schools of Waupaca. He was a member of the high school class of 1876, which was the first that ever graduated from the school. After graduation, he at once began farming on forty acres, which is a part of his present farm in Dayton township. He was married, February 27, 1884, in Waupaca, to Miss Amy A. Richmond, who was born in Waushara county, and is the daughter of Merrick and Clarinda (Allen) Richmond. Her father was a farmer, but now keeps a boarding-house at Eagle River, WI. Mrs Richmond died in Waushara county, and was buried at Coloma, WI. Their children were two in number--Mrs. Munger, and a son who died in infancy.
After his marriage M. Munger began housekeeping on the farm, which then comprised 120 acres. He has since increased it to 200 acres, and in 1892 he remodeled his fine home, which is attractively located in a spacious lawn covered with trees of forest growth. His only child is Norman D., born December 31, 1885. Both he and his wife are, members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Munger is a Republican, and has filled various local offices; at present, he is supervisor in his District. For one term he taught school in Belmont township, Portage county. His present valuable farm includes a protion of the pioneer home which his father located forty-three years ago. Though still young in years, Mr. Munger is one of Dayton's most prosperous and successful farms.

The first record I have is of a Samuel Palmer who came from Rehoboth, Mass. to Windham where he died in 1743. His wife's name was Elizabeth Kinsley who died also in Windham in about 1771. I also have records of their son, Elazer {Sr.}who also was born in Rehoboth married a Mary Lillie from Lynn, Mass. in 1723 and both died in Conn. in 1783 snf 1768, respectively. Their son , Elazer {jr.} was born in Windham in 1726, married a Mary Eaton Allen. I have no date of death. Next is their son, Zuriel born 1771, married Martha Morgan in 1796 and died in 1855. She was born in1775 and died in 1853. I believe this part of my family tree should have records in Windham, Conn. I am very interested to know if any of this line fought in the revolutionary war.

The Coopersville Observer, November 14, 1884 - OBITUARY. Died, Oct. 31, 1884, Joel N. Pinney, aged 88 years, 5 months and 22 days.
The deceased was born in the town of Guilford, Windham Co., southern Vermont, May 9th, 1796. He was the youngest of eleven children. In his fourth year his parents moved to Plymoth, Winsor Co., Vt. Here he resided until 1821. He enlisted with the Green Mountain volunteers in the war of 1812, being then 18 years of age, and took part in the battle of Plattsburg. From Vermont he moved to Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co., N.Y. In 1823 he settled in Edwards of the same county. April 16, 1835, he married Miss Emily Lillie, of Edwards, sister of Benj. Lillie of Wright township. In February, 1872, he sold his dairy farm and came to Michigan, locating in this township, where he continued to reside until his death. He was the father of seven children, five of whom are now living--two sons and three daughters. One son is living in Edwards, N.Y., and one daughter in Iowa, the remaining three are residents of this township. He was a man who loved his home and was never away from his family more than four weeks at one time during his married life. He took a great interest in civil matters, during his early life and was well versed in historical facts in relation to governmental affairs and the early days of the country. Joseph Haven, 47, farmer, born NY; Julia, 45; Alice, 19; Wright, 16; Ellen, 12; (next page) Joseph Haven, 9; Ginette, 6; Hiram, 4; Mahala, 3; Platt, 6/12

Excerpts from "Armchair Trip Through South Edwards of Yesteryear" - Talk given in 1976 at Edwards Historical Association-by LaVerne H. Freeman, historian:
Had we gone up the hill back by Albert Austin's we would see Joseph Havens' place. He was also an early settler of the area, coming in 1829 when he was 16 years old, with two older men named Guiles. This must have been John Guiles and Reuben Guiles, Jr. He later married Julia Lillie and they established their home in an old log house already on the land he had purchased. The Havens story says they lived in the old log house until the new house was done in 1850 and moved into that.
But then it goes on to say that in 1849, Joseph and two friends went west overland to California, and returned in 1850 via Panama. When he arrived home, he found his family moved into the house on the other side of the road! Apparently Julia had kept busy while he was gone! She had four children to watch after, too.

[NI05450] The following information taken from an article off the Internet:
"Gordon W. Lillie was just a young boy when he first saw William F. Cody perform in Illinois. He knew at that time that his destiny was to go west and become a legend of the American West himself.
A few years later hisdreams would come true. He was recognized as a friend of the Pawnee Indians and was asked to bring a band of Indians to perform with The Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. But the story doesn't end there.
"Pawnee Bill," as he was known at that time, decided that he himself could produce a Wild West Show. Everyone else was making money at it so why not himself. So his wife May Manning Lillie and himself set to starting the biggest and broadest Wild West Show that ever toured the world.
Speaking of May Lillie, her story is an interesting one also. Daughter of a prominent Philadelphia physician, she was just fourteen years old when Gordon swept her off her feet. They married and Gordon brought her from her city surroundings to the plains of Kansas. She learned to shoot and ride from the Pawnee Indians, and soon became a trickshooting star of Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show.
As the years went by, The Pawnee Bill Show grew and became a well respected power in the show industry. Even Annie Oakley herself performed a season under his name. The rivalry betweeen the Buffalo Bill Show and his own offered many challenges to Pawnee Bill but his fortune grew and grew. And soon his dreams would be complete. The Baileys, of Barnum and Bailey, had purchased controlling interest in the Buffalo Bill Show, and were looking for investers to buy the show. They contacted none other than Gordon W. "Pawnee Bill" Lillie. Pawnee Bill bought the show and toured with it for five seasons as Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Pawnee Bill's Great Far East.
The show folded it's tents once and for all in Denver, Colorado, due to financial difficulties. Lillie could have bailed the show out once again, but knew the ride was over. Besides he had his ranch in Pawnee, Oklahoma and his wife, May, to go home to. His fortunes were still intact. It was time to grow with the country now.
Pawnee Bill's story does not end there. He became active in many aspects of society, including Boy Scouts of America, the highway commission, oil refineries, buffalo breeding and the founding of Mounted Troops of America."

Judi Humburg-McKinley quotes the following from a book she read regarding Gordon Lillie "Pawnee Bill":
"These exploits and adventures of the Evans boys fired Gordan's imagination to the wildest fancies, tempered only by the encouragement of his Irish mother to prepare himself for a good position before going out in the world. Susan Ann Conant Lillie, a favorite child of the noted Boston Banking family, was well-educated and intelligent. She was always deeply concerned about the education ofher children. She wanted Gordon to become a teacher.
His father, who had been born in Three Rivers, Quebec, was of Scottish parentage and a true pioneer in every sense of the word, and part of Gordan's heritage was the Scotchman's stubborn fearlessness, characterized by caution rather then recklessness or truculence. Newton Wesley Lillie had imigrated to Bloomington from Canada, working a while for the city. He operated a flour mill, was well-respected and considered prosperous."
In the will written by Henry B. King it relates in the Fourth part that at the death of his wife, Susannah King, that he wishes that John Morris Robert Conant, son of Malinda Conant, deceased, shall have all of her said share, except five dollars which I wish to be given Susan Lilley, daughter of said Malinda Conant."

[NI05908] The Washington Post, Thursday, October 4, 2001, p. B6 (Metro section):
John C. Lilly; Inventor Studied Dolphin Communications
LOS ANGELES---John Cunningham Lilly, 86, who championed the study of interspecies communications during a career that probed the mystery of human consciousness, died Sept. 30 at a hospital here after a heart attack.
An inventor, author and researcher, Dr. Lilly was a member of a generation of counterculture scientists and thinkers that included Ram Dass, Werner Erhard and Timothy Leary, all frequent visitors to the Lilly home. He never failed to stir controversy, especially among mainstream scientists.
"There were those who thought he was brilliant, and there were those who just thought he was insane. I, of course, thought he was a little bit of both, " said Jennifer Yankee Caulfield, who worked on a Lilly-led project in the early 1980s to teach dolphins a computer-synthesized language.
Dr. Lilly gained renown in the 1950s after developing the isolation tank. He saw the tanks, in which users are isolated from almost all external stimuli, as a means to explore the nature of human consciousness.
He later combined that work with his efforts to communicate with dolphins, as well as experiments with psychedelics.
"During a session in an isolation tank, constructed over a pool where dolphins were swimming, I participated in a conversation between the dolphins. It drove me crazy, there was too much information, they communicated so fast," Dr. Lilly wrote of one such experience.
Dolphins figured large in the 19 books he wrote, including "Man and Dolphin" and "The Mind of the Dolphin."
His work inspired two Hollywood movies, "The Day of the Dolphin" and "Altered States."
Dr. Lilly, who was born in St. Paul, Minn., was a graduate of the California Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania medical school. He conducted high-altitude research during World War II and later trained as a psychoanalyst.
In the 1950s, he began studying how bottle-nose dolphins vocalize, establishing centers in the U.S. Virgin Islands and, later, San Francisco to study dolphins. A decade, later, he began experimenting with psychedelics, including LSD, often while floating in isolation.

At first I thought it possible that Lewis Augsburger b abt 1846 was John's father; he is just a few pages from John and Daniel in Richland Twp in the 1910 census. But the 1880 census says that John was Lewis's half-brother; their father was Abraham.

Lewis married Celina abt 1888. Lewis was 74 years old in the 1910 census, Celina was 46 and they had been married 22 years. The age difference would indicate Lewis had been married before. Lewis was born in "Switz German," Celina was born in Ohio.

Lewis had 4 wives, according to an ancestry.com message board - Louisa Vagel (Voegel?), Margaret Wise, Mary E. Hammel, Selina Hamilton. Lived in Bluffton, Beaverdam area. According to a query by Robert Ingersoll on Feb. 4, 1998, Lewis's son John was born Dec. 22, 1866 and married Harriett Cedora Hartman in 1890 in Hancock County.
