From I.P. Beckett's history: They made their first home in Marshall County VA, living there from 1838 to 1852. In 1852, they moved over the Ohio River to Belmont County where they lived until 1860, when they moved to a large farm in what is known as Washington Bottom [Belleville], an area in Wood County WV located on the Ohio River and a short distance south of the city of Parkersburg WV. Here they lived until all their children were grown.
In 1882, William disposed of his home at Washington Bottom [Belleville], Wood County WV and purchased a farm at Ritchie County WV near the small town of Mole Hill. In 1893 he moved back to Wood County to live with his son James, where he died at age 79. Caroline continued to live in Wood County, where she passed away at the home of her grandson, James Beckett Jr., at age 87.

Humphry Becket - 2 males under 10, 1 male 16-26; 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 26-45 (I believe this was his mother)
> It has not been proven definitively that this is our Humphrey in this census record. There is another Humphrey Beckett in another township in Bedford County that is definitely not our Humphrey, but further work needs to be done to show that this is the right record.
> If this is the right record, it would indicate that Humphrey had two younger brothers and one younger sister born 1790-1800, and two younger sisters born 1784-1790. One of these would have been, I believe, Ann Beckett born 1786 who married Moses Kay and moved to Fairfield Co OH.

> This is possibly our Humphrey. We know from the following bill of sale that he was in Washington Co., Md., in 1809. It's the right number of people in his household but his wife would have been age 16-26 and 2 daughters under 10. (Certainly possible the record is in error and the numbers written down in the wrong column.)
In 1810 Frederick Co MD, there is a J. Bickett [indexed I. Bickett] - 0-1-0-1-0 / 2-0-0-1-0 (1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-45)

1840 Ohio census - Belmont Co, Washington Twp, p. 5:
Humphrey Beckett - 1 male 15-20 (John T.), 1 male 50-60; 1 female 50-60 (wife Rachel)
Note: Humphrey is listed right above his son-in-law, John Weekly.
In 1850, Humphrey is listed in the household of his son John in Washington Twp, Belmont Co.
LDS submissions says Humphrey was born in 1782 in The Rocks, Harford Co MD and that his wife Rachel was born in 1778 in Deer Creek, Harford Co MD. Submitter: John Hess Johnson, Serendipity Farm, HCR 01 Box 380, Jeffersonton VA 22724, Microfilm: NONE, Submission: AF93-101327. He is possibly a descendant of John T. Beckett, as that is the line that is here.
When Humphrey and Rachel were getting ready to move to Ohio, they sold some animals and farm equipment to an Edward Tyler. Possibly that's Rachel's father or brother. Carolyn Ford found the bill of sale. (Rhoda Miller told me this, July 2000.)
Land Record T-17, Washington Co., Md. Courthouse:
At the request of Edward Tyler, the following Bill of Sale was recorded the 23rd day of March 1809. Know all men by these present that I Humphrey Beckett of Washington County for and in consideration of the sum of thirty-four dollars to me in hand paid by Edward Tyler of the County aforesaid the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge have bargained and sold and by these present do bargain and sell to the said Edward Tyler one white Cow five years old valued at ten dollars, one loom & tackling valued at ten dollars, one feather [bed?] furniture valued at twelve dollars and one sandy-coloured Sow with three pigs valued at four dollars subject nevertheless to the proviso and condition hereinafter mentioned. To have and to hold the said Sow [Cow?], Loom and tackling, bed and furniture, Sow and pigs unto him the said Edward Tyler and his assigns, provided nevertheless that if the said Humphrey Beckett or his assigns shall sell and truly pay or cause to be paid to the said Edward Tyler or his assigns the aforesaid sum of thirty-four dollars on or before the first day of August, next ... the date hereof, then this deed and bill of sale and everything therein contained to cease to be of any force and to be and become null and void. Witness my hand I seal this 6th day of March 1809.

Post on Tyler Family GenForum by William N. Ashbey, Oct. 14, 2000: Looking for information on marriage and descendants of Edward Tyler, b. Mar 2, 1753, who was son of Robert Tyler and Mary Butt. His grandparents were Edward Tyler and Elizabeth Duvall (b. 1696).
This Edward is old enough to be Rachel's father, and may be the Edward in the 1809 bill of sale.

In the History of Hardin County, pioneers of Liberty Twp: John and Elizabeth Shuster, 1834. Elizabeth's brother Samuel Wingate is also listed, 1838. I am assuming Samuel and Elizabeth are siblings based on their close proximity in location.
"John Shuster was born in Washington County, Penn., in 1800; in 1814, he removed with his parents to Tuscarawas County, Ohio, where he married Elizabeth Winget in 1821. In 1839 he removed with his family to Hardin County and settled on Section 9, Liberty Township. He had previously, in 1834, entered his land. In 1841 his house was destroyed by fire; it occurred in the night, and nothing was saved out of the house but two feather beds, the family barely escaping in their nightclothes. He came here and commenced right in the woods with but $37. His son Daniel went to Logan County and worked a $8 per month to get provisions for the family until they could clear land and raise a crop. His wife died Feb. 4, 1869." Daniel Shuster, 2 males 16 and upwards, 2 males under 16, 7 females. Listed right next to him is Martin Shuster, 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, and 1 female.
I don't have birthdates for all of the children, but from this census I can assume that one of the daughters, Sarah or Elizabeth, was born before 1790 and one was born after 1790. One of the sons - Daniel, Michael or George - was born before or in 1774, and the other two sons were born before 1790. They were probably born between 1783 and 1790, since there is a gap there in the known birthdates.
I would guess that Martin Shuster is a son of Daniel and Margaret.
Also in the area: Samuel Shuster, 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, 4 females; Morgaret Shuster, 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, 1 female.

Daniel Shuster dob 6/13/1752 was born in Germany. He settled in Washington Co. PA in 1766 until 1800 when he migrated to Ohio. He fought in the Rev. War Sept of 1778. He saved his commanding officer's life and was awarded 12 quarter sections of land in Ohio, they were deeded to him by the President of the USA. The land was in the New Cumberland area, in Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties. He had many children. ... There are 2 books, these were distributed to the main branches of the family. My grandfather's mother was a Shuster, so he has a set. Each family was to continue the descent of their particular branch. My branch migrated to Ada in Hardin County Ohio at some point and then on to Greene in Trumbull County.

Will of Thomas Burgess (p. 11, Burgess Genealogy)
I, Thomas Burgess, Senr., of Sandwich, being through God's goodness full of years, and waiting for my change, and yet having my understanding remaining with me,--blessed be God,--and also through God's great goodness being possessed of a competent outward estate, do now on serious consideration make this my last Will and Testament, touching the disposal of my estate after my dear wife and myself be decently buried, and all necessary changes defrayed, and all debts paid, the remaining part I give as followeth:
Item. I give unto my eldest son, Thomas Burgess, of Rhode Island, five pounds out of my movable estate, to be paid by my executors after our decease.
Item. I give unto my son, Jacob Burgess, upon good consideration, all my house-lot, dwelling-house, barn and out-houses, all my upland on both sides of the cartway, all that belongs to my homestead dwelling. I also give him all my meadow that I have lying below Michael Blackwell's dwelling-house on both sides of Scussett river, for him my said son Jacob Burgess to enjoy, use and posess during his natural life; and after his decease I give the said dwelling-house, barn and all the forementioned lands, both upland and meadow, to his son Thomas Burgess, my grandson, to him and his heirs forever. But if my said grandson die without heirs, then my will is that the said house and lands above-mentioned shall return to the next heir of my son, Jacob Burgess. I give also to my said son, Jacob Burgess, all my land lying near and adjacent to Thomas Tupper's lands below the cartway, having Mr. Freeman's land on the western side. These I give to him upon this condition, that he, my said son Jacob Burgess, pay or cause to be paid unto my grandson Thomas Burgess, son of my son John Burgess, ten pounds in good pay, to be made to him by my grandson, at 23 years of age.
Item. I give unto my son, Joseph Burgess, the first and second lots that adjoin his other lands near his house, if my said son accept of them so as to pay unto my son, John Burgess, five pounds; but if my son Joseph refuse said lands upon such terms, as to pay said five pounds as aforesaid, then my will is that said land return to my son, Ezra Perry, that he perform the condition,--I mean by two lots, those lots that were once * * *, then I give them: I give to my said son Ezra Perry, all my other lands that lie above the said two lots, for him to enjoy forever, the which lands I bought of Mr. Edward Freeman, Jr.
Item. I give to my dear wife all my movable estate, to be at her own disposing at her decease. I mean chattels of all sorts that I may have.
And I do appoint and ordain my son, Ezra Perry, and my son, Jacob Burgess, to be my Executors to see this my last Will performed, as I witness under my hand and seal, this fourth day of April 1684.

In The American Genealogist, Vol. 73, No. 3, July 1998, pp. 161-161-171, "The True Origin of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower, With Evidence of His Earlier Presence in Virginia," Caleb Johnson shows that Stephen Hopkins was not born at Wortley, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucester, England, as has been the prevailing theory for the past 70 years, but instead from Hursley, Hampshire, England. The parish registers of Hursley contain the baptismal records of Constance and Giles Hopkins as well as an additional baptism of a child heretofore unknown (Elizabeth). A burial record was also discovered for Mary Hopkinsm the wife of Stephen Hopkins, disproving the myth that Constance Dudley was the name of his first wife. Johnson corrects a number of inaccuracies which have been published on the Hopkins family over the past century, adds a few little-known facts about the family, and provides historical documentation for the tradition that Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower was the same man as Stephen Hopkins of the Sea Venture which went to Jamestown, Virginia in 1609.
Notes for Stephen Hopkins:
Stephen Hopkins was one of the original Pilgrims. He was a prominent man in Plymouth Colony, and one of the few passengers of the Mayflower who came to this country with servants (Edward Dotey and Edward Lister). Governor William Bradford, in his enumeration of the passengers of the Mayflower, thus describes him in his History of Plymouth Plantations:
In 1650, Governor Bradford writes:
Mr. Hopkins & his wife are now both dead, but they lived about 20 years in this place & had one son and four daughters born here. Their son became a seaman and dyed at Barbadoes, one daughter died here & two are married, one of them hath three children and one is yet to marry. So their increase which still survive are 5, but his son Giles is married & has 4 children. His daughter Constanta is also married & hath 12 children all of them living & one married. One of these children was Mary Snow, who married Thomas Paine.
Stephen settled in the part of Eastham now included in the town of Orleans, on the place at the head of the Cove, called by the Indians "Kesscayoganseet." and later owned and occupied by James Percival.
Stephen Hopkins was one of only a few passengers on the Mayflower to have made a prior trip to America. He came in 1609 on the Sea Venture headed for Jamestown, in Virginia. But instead, they were marooned on an island, where the 150 passengers were stranded for nine months. Hopkins led an uprising challenging the governor's authority and was sentenced to death. But he begged and moaned about the ruin of his wife, and so was pardoned. The company built two vessels and escaped the island. Hopkins returned to England.
Stephen Hopkins brought with him on the Mayflower his wife Elizabeth, children Giles and Constance by his first marriage, and Damaris by his second marriage. A son Oceanus was born while the Mayflower was at sea. He participated in the early exploring missions and was an "ambassador" along with Myles Standish for Indian relations.
In 1636, Hopkins was fined for the battery of John Tisdale, and in 1638 he was fined for not dealing fairly with an apprentice-girl, Dorothy Temple. He was also charged with several other crimes, including selling glass at too high a price, and selling illegal intoxicants.

Dan & Lydia Hadsell came from Connecticut and settled in Bath Twp, Allen Co OH in 1837 with their son Almon, whom they lived with until their death. Almon was a Justice of the Peace, and performed the marriage of his sister Mary and Samuel Heath. (from the History of Allen County)
Daniel moved in 1834 to Trumbull Co., Ohio, in 1835 to Allen Co., Ohio. In 1860 his son George M. Hadsell writes his cousin Ira, "My father is well. He is very smart for a man of his age [80 years]. He is worth more than any hired man to do more chores and see to things." (Hadsell-Hodsoll p. 160)

I believe there is another William Wiley in Smith Twp during this time period. He was a son of Hans Wiley. This William Wiley was born March 1800 in Dunbar, Fayette Co PA, and died May 18, 1873. The 1850 census shows him living with his brother Henry and sister Margaret (house #2274). Henry was born May 7, 1807 in Glencoe, Richland Twp, Belmont Co, and died Mar 12, 1892, buried Warnock cem. Margaret was born July 1804 in Richland Twp, and died Dec 24, 1875. In 1800, Hans and Susanna Wiley with their five children (Joseph, Archibald, Elinor, John, and baby William) moved to Belmont Co OH, residing in Richland Twp until 1805. Then they entered, made improvements and settled on a part of section 6 in Smith Twp, where they lived during the remainder of their days.
1850 Ohio census - Belmont Co, Smith Twp (roll 661), enumerated Sept. 28, 1850, p. 267A:
2301 James Wiley, 48, farmer, born Ohio; Mary, 32; William W., 10; John, 8; James Jr., 6; Isabella, 4; Sarah, 2; Margaret Hollowell, 14.
2302 Henry Wiley, 43, farmer, born Ohio; Margaret, 38; Alvorah (f), 4; Lucy, 2; William, 50, carpenter.
2303 Joseph Holmes, 73, farmer, born Ireland; Elisabeth, 55, born Ireland
Note: I find it odd that a man named Holmes lives next to these Wileys. Is it possible that William & Margaret's son Holms was named for him?
Hans Wiley was born 1760 in County Down, Ireland, and died May 26, 1835 in Smith Twp, Belmont Co OH. He married Susanna Irwin abt 1780 in Dunbar, Fayette Co PA. Tradition has it that Hans was an escapee from a British warship when he arrived in America in 1778 at Lewes, Delaware. See web page http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/i/l/James-R-Wiley-OH/GENE3-0002.html.
There is a notice in the Lancaster (PA) Journal, p. 554, of interest because it mentions another Wiley family coming from County Down in Ireland:
Nov. 14, 1801 - Information wanted: If a certain Robert Wiley, from near Loughbricklands, in the county of Down, in Ireland, who some time ago resided in Lancaster county, Penn., but who removed to some part of the state of Virginia, be now living, it is requested by an aged mother, his sister and brothers lately come into this country, that he will immediately write them the place of his abode, directing his letter to Elizabeth Wiley, care of James Scarhig, merchant, Baltimore.

Sam Beckett was born in Belmont County Ohio in 1848. He migrated to Wetzel County WV around 1880. He married Mary Malissa Postlethwait with whom he had three children: Our ancester John Beckett, a daughter Matilda who married Hiriam Tharp and migrated to Oregon, and a son Joseph who moved to the Canton Ohio area of whom we find no trace after his leaving this area. Mary died in 1884 and Sam married Lutisha Woods of Greene County PA. They also had three children. Jennie moved to OK and married Lee Ford. Lula married three times-to Cynus Fisher, Samuel Batson, and Morgan Snyder. She lived in the Mannington-Fairmont area of WV. Bessie died at the age of 17. Any knowledge of Sam or Joseph would be appreciated.

As you can see from the reversal of the name and the discrepancy in the birthdate, this may or may not be the same person. Sam never mentioned his family to his children nor visited them after moving to Wetzel County. Mary M. Beckett's brother B. B. Postlethwait deeded property to his sister but not to Sam. Sam was not well liked by my husband's grandmother who only allowed him to visit when she had to. There are several law inquiries in the Wetzel County records over the children John and Joseph by the Postlethwaits. Joseph and Matilda left the area after they came of age and never returned. Information about his family from Belmont or Monroe County Ohio is missing from any of our records.

Jul 17, 2000: Rhoda Miller remembers her family going to visit Lula Snyder in Metz WV when she was younger, but she did not know who Lula Snyder was and her brother Chick could not remember the visit. As I was reading the above notes to Rhoda, after "Lula married three time-to Cyrus Fisher, Samuel Batson and Morgan Snyder," suddenly Rhoda said "Lula Snyder! That's Lula Snyder!" Rhoda was quite pleased to finally figure out who Lula Snyder was - her mother's cousin, daughter of Samuel David Beckett.

There is a tradition that three brothers - David, Thomas and John or William - came from the vicinity of London, England and landed near Baltimore. John or William went to Philadelphia, or farther north; David settled on the eastern shore of southern Maryland, spelling his name Street; Thomas, spelling his name Streett, settled in Harford County, Maryland, and took out a patent for a 700-acre tract called "Streett's Happy Hunting Ground" and "Street's Pleasant Hills" near the Rocks of Deer Creek. In 1774 he was residing there. (The Streett Genealogy by Mrs. Mary G. Streett, published 1895, Exeter NH, p. 395)
He was married twice; the first wife was May Fox and his second, Sarah Cox, was said to be of Welsh descent and survived him. Col. John Streett recorded in his family Bible the death of his father, Thomas Streett, on June 16, 1822.
Thomas Streett engaged in farming but retained his English taste for hunting and frequently entered in the chase with horse and hound. He was a strict adherent to the established church and regularly attended his church 10 miles distant. (Baldwin and Street Families, p. 10)

John Cox must have been a Quaker. I wondered why they were married in Little Britain in Pennsylvania -- Little Britain is a Monthly Meeting: "Not until 1790 was Deer Creek attached to the Baltimore Quarter of the Yearly Meeting of Maryland. Before that time, it was a member of the Western Quarter of the Yearly Meeting of Pennsylvania. In 1819, Deer Creek Monthly belonged to the new Nottingham Quarterly, which included Nottingham and Little Britain Monthly Meetings." I don't believe this is the Samuel who married Berthuleah Ritts in 1836. I think the Samuel who married Berthuleah was actually a son of John Beckett and Hannah Potts, based on the following marriage records:
DEVOLL, Jeptha & BECKET, Mary both of Goshen Twp on 14 Feb 1828 by Thomas R. Runcle; vo-Saml. Becket & William Coffee; pg 174.
RIGGS, Sylvester & ROBISON, Margaret both of Smith Twp on (dt-ng) by William Kinney; license issued 25 Apr 1835; return dated 08 Jun 1835; vo-William Becket; pg 75.
BECKET, Samuel & RITTS, Barthulea on 07 May 1836 by John W. Calvert JP; vo-his father & Silvester Riggs; pg 217.
Our Samuel would have been about 7 years old and could not possibly have been the voucher. So we know there is another Samuel Beckett in this area in 1828. I have assigned him to the family of John & Hannah Potts based on his appearance as voucher in the marriage record for Mary Becket. And he would have been of a better age to marry Berthuleah in 1836; our Samuel would have been about 15 - a few years too young.

From Nola Rains, Decatur IN, email: thunderstruck@parlorcity.com:
I'm trying to help my boss find information about her family as she doesn't know how to go about doing genealogy research. ... I will ask her tomorrow and see if she knows anymore about Alonzo and Caroline. If she doesn't, perhaps her brother will. If she has any information, I'll send it to you right away.
I believe she told me that Alonzo and Caroline Beckett Wade had a daughter named Erma Verdella (she went by Della) who married a Francis (or Frank) Crowl. I think these were my boss' grandparents. My boss' name is Erma Rohrer. She is a United Methodist minister and is from the Canton, Ohio area. She is married to Hugh Rohrer, also a U.M. minister, and also from the same area in Ohio. They currently pastor churches in the Hoagland and Harlan, Indiana area. She was named for her grandmother, Erma Verdella. I'll try to find time to ask her about her people tomorrow. It may be a few days before I get back with you but I'll see what she knows about her people
and will let you know.
My boss has a vague memory of Alonzo who was her great-grandfather. We are still hunting his burial place. We know that they lived in Stark Co., Ohio and that's where he died but there doesn't seem to be any cemetery records for him. My boss thinks perhaps he was taken back to Belmont Co. for burial. When we find him, I'll let you know.
My boss is positive the family lived in Stark Co., Ohio. All her family lived there, and many still do. I emailed a lady for a look-up for Alonzo in the Stark Co. cemetery records - she found an Alonzo, but it was Alonzo Ford Wade, son of the original Alonzo. However, my boss remembers very plainly of going to her great-grandparents home in Stark Co. She said Alonzo was ill and she remembers being told to be quiet as "Grandpa was sick". She said she can still see him lying in a big old iron-frame bed. Said he was a big man, quite tall for that era. She thinks that perhaps Alonzo and Caroline were taken back to Belmont Co. for burial. I have an email query out for a look-up on this.

It's possible that the John Hoffert in the 1870 PA census for Berks Co, Brecknock Twp (roll 1305), p. 119a, taken June 29, is a brother to Christina:
John Hoffert, 64, farmer; Sarah, 55; John, 20; Nelson, 18; Justina, 15; John Griffith, 10; Cassy, 12
This is the area where the Zerbes lived, as several of the names are those listed in the 1863 court petition after Jacob Zerbe died. Later in the census (p. 125a), there is the family of Moses Hoffert, 30 (household 159) (he married Sarah Mosser, age 32 in the 1870 census), then Elizabeth Hoffert, 84 (household 160) - Elizabeth could be Christina's mother.
