Notes

[NI07430] Sharon Shellhorn Phelps (glphelps@msn.com): I am currently concentrating my research on the Shellhorn Family line; the first known relative is Balser Shellhorn who apparently arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1751 as he took the oath of alligiance to that state on 9/25/1751. His name at that time was given as Johann Balthas Schoelhorn probably from Germany. Family stories spell his descendents name most commonly as Shellhorn (earlier records interchange spelling with Shelhorn). Balser married Mary Amweg around 1760's and owned land in Lancaster County, PA; later moving to an area near Oldtown, MD and owning a considerable amount of land in that region. His children were: John b. abt 1761(my line), Barbara, Catherine, and Mary. John and Balser both moved to MD and John's children were all born near Oldtown, MD...

Per notes from "Shelhorn Genealogy" by Jack M. Lines; Johann Balthas Schoelhorn (hereafter named Balser Shellhorn unless quoting a source with another spelling) arrived and took the Pennsylvania oath of Allegiance 11 days after Matthias Shelhorn. He arrived in Philadelphia on the "Phoenix" (assume that this is the name of the ship) on 9/25/1751. There is a family legend that two Shelhorn relatives set out from Germany together, fell out and broke contact with each other. Both descendents of Lewis and John Shellhorn's family have this tradition. Note states that the Shellhorn's may have come from Saxony or Hanover, Germany.

Some difficulty arises from the variances in the spelling of Balser's given and surname: It appears as Balshor, Baltzer, Balser, Balsor, and Balsaw; and his surname as-Shellhorn, Shellhorne, Shalhorn, Shelhorn, Shelborn, Shoelhorn and Sheelhorn. Only one document survives which he actually signed; his will. There his name is signed Balser Sheelhorn; the attorney spelled it Balser Shellhorn according to Jack Lines' history (the spelling I will continue to use in my recorded genealogical family record of the Shellhorn's).

LAND HOLDINGS:
Balser settled in Rapho Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania probably before his marriage to the daughter of an earlier settler in the county and definitely by 1761 when he bought 204 acres of land that probably now lies in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania (John Lines History p.333) Per county records, Balser bought land on May 11, 1761 (abt ten yrs after arriving). He was probably a bachelor when he arrived but married Mary Amweg, daughter of John Martin Amweg. John Amweg arrived in America from Germany on 9/26/1737 and received a land patent in Lancaster Co. in 1748. Balser by 1771 had acquired 380 acres of land; buying 140 from the estate of his father-in-law in 1769 and 37 from Jacob Segrist in 1770 (Lancaster Co. PA, deeds,C-169:258; per John Lines) From the few tax records available, it seems that sometime between 1773 and 1779, Balser rid himself of the first 204 acres; perhaps giving them to his son, John, but no record has been found (John Lines History p. 333). According to John Lines, the tax records show that his was also a distiller in addition to being a farmer.

One reason for the lack of records on Balser and Matthias during the first 8 - 10 years in America may be that they indentured themselves to pay for their passage. If they were indentured this also may explain the lack of contact between the two.

After serving in the Revolutionary War (more details under "facts"), Balser apparently decided to leave Pennsylvania. On Feb. 5, 1787 sold 177 acres of land purchased in 1769 and 1770 (Lancaster Co. PA Deeds, FF:324-Jack Lines) and he bought 332 acres of land on Patterson's Creek in Hampshire Co. VA just across the Potomac from Maryland (Hampshire Co. Va. Deeds, 7-152-Jack Lines). Per Jack, it is not clear if he moved to this land or that adjacent to it which he had received as a patent from the state of Virginia. (Ibid, 9:503, 505, 530-Jack Lines). On October 25, 1788, he bought "Hard Bargain," piece of land between Old Town and Fort Cumberland, in Washington (now Allegany) County MD. He was listed as resident of Washington County, then in deeds after 1788, he is listed as a resident of Allegany County MD. It is felt that he owned large quantities of land; his will also mentions 162 acres called "Bad Luck" on Martin's Run that mostly became railroad and canal right-of-way by 1895. He apparently sold land to his son and sons-in-law on time (with easy payments), therefore, his estate was still open on May 18, 1829. (Jack Lines)

Notes from Robert & Jenelle Flocke state that Balser and his son John's wills are the oldest wills actually on file in Allegany County. In his will he left 25 pounds to "the religious society called Quakers." Balser left Christian Halderman (Haldeman), his son-in-law, a 162-acre tract called Bad Luck along Martin's Run. Christian was to move to and live on the land to get it. He also left his wife Mary "all my household and kitchen furniture, my horse, saddle and bridle, one milk cow to be chosen from among my stock of cattle by herself, 50 pounds of currency money in cash." He instructed his executor, son John, to collect all debts owed to the estate and to pay Mary on a prescribed date each year for the rest of her life. (Bob Flocke's notes 6/28/1981)

Military service: October 28, 1778, Revolutionary War; Priv 4th Class, Capt Patrick Hayes Co, 8th Co, 3rd Dtn, Lancaster Co Militia.

[NI07440] He arrived on the ship "Robert & Alice" on Sep 3, 1739. He warranted 200 acres Apr 23, 1740 in Rapho Twp, Lancaster Co PA. His land was divided up among his heirs as early as 1758. He died by 1747. His widow was taxed at Rapho in 1751. He was married to Catherine, who was dead by 1758. The signers on his bond were John Ebersole, Jacob Schneider (his neighbor and probably the 1739 immigrant from Friedelsheim and dead by 1758) and Jacob Rohrer (dead by 1758, he signed bond "IR"). In 1763 his land was patented by his children as follows: John, Peter, Elizabeth wife of Christian Martin, Mary, deceased, wife of Christian Aycker, Catherine, Anna Elizabeth and Barbara. (Emigrants/Davis p. 123)

[NI07441] Martin Amweg is on the list for September 26, 1737 The St. Andrew Galley from Rotterdam, Netherland, but last from Cowes, England, arrived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Daniel was born in Berkeley County VA 11-5-1772. In 1864 Berkeley County was part of the mountainous region of northwestern Virginia that broke away from the Confederacy during the Civil War to become the state of West Virginia. Early census records from the state of Ohio show that Mary was born in Maryland around 1781. Daniel's parents where Jacob Snider and Margaret Studebaker. The region of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia that Daniel was born in was settled by predominantly German settlers. His religious affiliation was with the German Reformed Church, and it is probable that his paternal and maternal lineage where both of a Germanic nature. Mary's father's name was John Herschberger and her mother's was Rebecca (maiden name unknown). With a name like Herschberger it should be obvious that Mary was of German descent. The area that Daniel was from was bordered by Maryland separated by the Potomac River. It is probable that the couple met each other because of a close geographical proximity, and a mututal involvement of their families in the German Reformed Church. Daniel was a Reverend in the German Reformed Church and traveled as a circuit preacher most of his life.

Sometime before 1798 the couple made their home in Bedford Co., PA. The first seven of their fifteen children where born there. The first seven (in order of age) were: Rebecca, George N., Jacob, Mary, Catherine and Susan (twins), and Adam. Between Adam's birth 3-3-1805 and November of 1806 the family migrated to Thorn Twp., Perry Co., Ohio as their last 8 children where born there. The last eight (in order of age) were: John Henry, Elizabeth and Daniel O. (twins), Samuel and Solomon D. (twins), Joseph, Sarah and Frances.

Mary died sometime between 1818 and 1828 (probably around 1825). She was buried in Perry Co., OH. Daniel remarried a woman named Parkinson and had three children: David, Percy and Eli. Daniel died 1866 at the age of 96 and was buried in Perry Co., OH.

Daniel Snider was one of the first settlers of Thorn Twp., Perry Co. OH.

History of Perry County (Thorn Township), p 318:
Many Dunkers, or German Baptists, were among the earliest pioneers of Thorn, and religious worship was held at private houses at a very early day, no doubt previous to 1810. Daniel Snider was a preacher and leader, and services were often held at his house. Snider also preached in Fairfield, Muskingum and other counties, and was widely known, and everywhere venerated by the brethren of the denomination to which he belonged. He died at the age of 93, universally esteemed.

From Biographies of Allen County, Ohio residents, under Solomon D. Snider:
The grandfather of our subject was born in Pennsylvania, whence he came to Ohio, entering land in Perry County, where he died March 3, 1866, at the age of 93 years, 7 months and a few days. He was a Whig, while his son and grandson (our subject) became Democrats. He took an active part in reform work and was a leader in the German Baptist or Dunkard Church, being one of the preachers of that body and holding services in his house and barn until they were able to build a house of worship.

Daniel Snider, the father of our subject, was born in Thorn Township, Perry County, Ohio, June 28, 1808. During his younger days he engaged in teaching school, and afterwards bought a farm of 180 acres in Perry County, where he devoted his time to agriculture until his death November 3, 1861. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. He was married to Mary Greenawalt, who was born in Hocking County, Ohio, in 1811 and died in Perry County, March 6, 1895, at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 20 days. Her parents, Mathias and Mary (Coon) Greenawalt, came to this State from Maryland, and were of German descent. She was the mother of the following children, viz.: Lucinda (Boyer), deceased; John Henry, who resides on the homestead in Perry County; Mary Katharine (Clum), deceased; Solomon D.; Sarah Elizabeth (Anspach), of Jackson township; and Eliza Ann (Humberger), deceased.

[NI07483] Jacob is believed to be the son of Christian Snider, who was among three Sniders (Jacob, Mathias and Christian) who arrived in Philadelphia on the Ship ALLEN in September 1729 and settled in Earl Twp, Lancaster Co PA. On board this ship was a large group of German Baptists, led by Alexander Mack, one the of the founders of the German Baptists or Brethren, who had fled Germany where they had been persecuted by both the Protestants and Catholics.

It appears that Jacob's father and his family settled in that part of Frederick Co MD which later became Washington County and near what is now Hagerstown MD. In 1767 a Jacob "Shnyder" ( the family name was likely spelled "Schneider" in German), Michael Miller, Conrad Fox, Simon Stuckey and Philip Jacob Miller appear together on 10 Apr 1767 in Lancaster County to take the Oath of Affirmation and stated that they were all of Frederick County, MD (Pennsylvania Archives, 2nd Series, Vol. 2,467). According to Stuckey genealogy, the above Simon Stuckeyıs son, Simon Stuckey III, married Jacob Sniderı s daughter Margaret. This theory on Jacob Snider's location is further reinforced by the fact that Simon Stuckey II lived and died in Frederick Co MD near Hagerstown. Furthermore, Jacob's daughter Mary married Jacob Studebaker, whose father Peter Studebaker lived and died near what is now Hagerstown, Washington Co MD. It is known also that Jacob Studebaker and his wife Mary Snider moved from Washington Co MD to Bedford Co PA in 1782.

By 1770 Jacob and his family had settled in Berkeley Co VA (now WV). Jacob owned 238 acres of land on Back Creek which was purchase in three parcels. The certificate of deed for the first parcel of 140 acres was received from Lord Fairfax on 17 Feb 1773. The certificate of deed for the second parcel containing 44 acres was made out on 5 Oct 1770 and dated 26 May 1789. The third parcel of 54 acres was made out on 3 April 1779 and deeded on 13 Nov 1787.

Jacob operated a grist mill on the Back Creek property, near the area known today as Swinging Bridge, east of Jones Spring. The 1809 Charles Varle map shows a grist mill on the Snider land indicating that the mill was built earlier than 1809. When Jacob died in 1790, he willed that his son Abraham should receive the land when the youngest son arrives at age. Abraham died in 1845 and willed that his property, both real and personal, be sold and the mill property was sold to Robert Penery. The mill was destroyed by a flood in 1889, the same year of the famous Johnstown flood.

Jacob Snider' will was written on 28 Nov 1787 and probated on 15 June 1790 in Martinsburg, Berkeley Co VA. Based upon a gravestone inscription located on Jacob's land, it is believed that Jacob died on 3 Mar 1790 at the age of 58, which would give his birth year as 1731 or 1732. Jacob's will names only his wife Margaret and his sons Jacob, John, Abraham, David, Joseph, Daniel and William. The daughters are not named but court proceedings later identify some of them. After Jacob's death, his widow Margaret moved to West Providence Twp, Bedford Co PA where she is listed as paying taxes until 1812 and deceased at the time of 1813 tax collection. Jacob's son Abraham and daughter Hannah, who married Jacob Riner, were the only two of Jacob's children that remained in Berkeley Co VA. Jacob's other older sons (Jacob Jr., John, David and Joseph) were each willed land that Jacob owned in Bedford Co PA. The younger sons (Daniel, George and William) did not receive any land but they shared equally in the estate.

He was listed as an Anabaptist refugee, age 32, living at Friedelsheim on 6 April 1672 with his wife Babi Joost, age 25, and his three children "of which one is still in Switzerland and the oldest is 9 years." In 1677 he took a lease on a farm at Friedelsheim for nine years. He was listed as a Mennonite tenant of Friedelsheim in 1682. In 1685 he was listed as a Mennonite on the Monsheim Estate near Friedelsheim. Besides the four sons listed below, he possibly had several daughters. (Richard Warren Davis, Emigrants p. 123)

[NI07657] It would seem that Mary Ann Lechrone should fall in the family of John Leckrone. Is it possible she is the Nancy Leckrone born June 26, 1828, daughter of John and Nancy (Mumma) Leckrone? Nancy was a nickname for Ann.

[NI07662] This may be the John Hersberger in the 1790 census for Bedford County PA, 1 male over 16, 6 males under 16 and 4 females. According to Nancye Herrold (Hershberger GenForum), this is the one. He moved into Snake Spring Valley, Bedford Co. PA from Lancaster Co. PA during 1797. She found this out from the land deed. But they must have moved to Bedford Co by 1790, since they are there for the census.

[NI07665] PETER STUDEBAKER was baptized 16 Oct 1695 in Solingen, Germany and died before 8 Jun 1754 in Frederick Co (later Washington Co) MD. He married Anna Margaretha Aschauer on 24 Mar 1725 in Solingen, Germany, from another family of cutlers in Solingen. Anna Margaretha died after 1737 and before 1749. Peter then married SUSANNA ________ probably about 1740; Susanna died around 1753.

Peter had at least 16 children, but only nine lived to maturity. Eight of the children were by Anna Margaretha and another eight by Susanna. The youngest child by Susanna was Jacob, born around 1752, who is our direct ancestor. Peter first settled for a short time near Germantown PA, but around 1738 moved with his family to the Conogocheaque and Hagarstown area, which was then a part of the back country of Prince George's County, MD. Peter was active in affairs of that area and bought and sold at various times substantial acres of land. Jonathan Hagar, the founder of Hagarstown, served as Administer of Peter Studebaker's Estate at the time of his death. (http://www.infinet.com/~wkfisher/Studebaker.html)

[NI07668] JOHANNES STAUDENBECKER was baptized in 1662, married to CATHERINE RAW in 1692, and was buried in 1728. Catherine Raw was born in 1670 and was buried in 1712. Among the children born to Johannes and Catherine were three sons, all of whom immigrated to America. Johannes, the youngest, was baptized in 1712 and was thought to have immigrated to America in 1732; however, no record has been found of him if he did arrive in America. Peter, baptized in 1695, and Clemens, baptized in 1701, immigrated to America in 1736, along with a cousin, Johann Heinrich. All of the over 250,000 Studebakers in America in modern times are reputed to be descended from these three immigrants. Peter is the direct ancestor of our branch of the family and Clemens (Clement) is the direct ancestor of the more famous branch which manufactured wagons and automobiles.

Peter, age 38, Clement, age 36. and Heinrich, age 29, along with their wives and some children, were imported in the ship HARLE, from Rotterdam, and arrived in the port of Philadelphia on September 1, 1736.

Mr. Emmert Studebaker of Tipp City, Ohio has a letter in his possession, dated September 16, 1737, written by Peter and Clement Studebaker to their relatives back in Germany. This fact indicates persons of some social and intellectual achievement; relatively few people in those days could read or write. An English translation of this letter is contained in STUDEBAKER FAMILY IN AMERICA, published by the Studebaker Family National Association, 6555 South State Route 202, Tipp City, Ohio 45371, and copyrighted in 1976. All of the preceding information and much of that following on the early Studebakers was taken from this publication. Much, much more about the Studebakers is contained in this book , a copy of which is owned by Keith Fisher.

[NI07671] The earliest certain record of the Studebaker family relates to a "Staudtenbecker" born in 1570 in a district now in Germany called "Remscheid," located about five miles east of Solingen. Solingen, the old blade-city, known to be the European "home town" of the Studebaker family, is located about 14 miles (30 kilometers) northeast of the Rhine River city of Cologne. From the earliest times this community had been devoted almost entirely to the single trade of ironworking. In the 1960's an ancient smelter was discovered in a nearby forest, which was estimated to be 2,500 years old. For at least five generations in Germany, the Studebakers followed the metal working trade and belonged to a guild in which membership was restricted to certain families and trade secrets, such as forging techniques, tempering or heat treating of cutting tools, were carefully guarded.

[NI07683] I saw your name on the Allen Co. site. I am also researching Zerbe name. My gr-gr-great grandmother was Magdalena "Maggie" D. Zerbe b. Dec 1872 in Shelby Co. She married George Wm. Richter Feb. 28 1892 in Shelby Co. Maggie's parents were Michael Zerbe (b. May 2 1832 in PA d. Dec 13 1913 in Shelby Co.) and Mary Swickard/Snyder (She was married to Henry Swickard before she married Zerbe.) b. Mar 12 1840 in Shelby Co. d. Feb 5 1923 in Shelby Co. I know Michael's father to be David and his mother to possibly be Elizabeth. I believe they were from Berks Co. PA.

I hope some of this may be familiar to you. The connection to Allen Co. is Maggie. She moved there in 1908 after her husband died. Maggie had 3 sisters: Estella, Manda and Alice and possibly other siblings. I am happy to share all my Zerbe information with you.

[NI07716] Johann Philipp Zerbe was known as Philipp or Phillip and known spellings for his last name include Zerwe, Zerbst, Zirbe, Zerber, and Serven.

From WFT Volume 4, Tree #4174
Article by Henry Z. Jones, Jr. entitled "Finding the Ancestral Home of a Palatine Forefather: The Case of Martin Zerbe," published in The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine:

"...A 'Phillip Zerber' was found on the original Rotterdam Lists near Martin and also on the London Lists ("Phillip Zerbst, 25, Lutheran, Figure maker"). It was noted that the Kocherthal records show a "Johann Philipp Zerb of Kettenbach, commune of Munster" who was married to a "Maria Catharina Steiber of the commune of Hachenburg" on 9 Jul 1710. Maps showed that Kettenbach was north of Wiesbaden, near a town of Munster and but a few miles away from Eppstein..."

See notes of brother Johann Martin.

From WFT Volume 6, Tree # 4527: Phillip may also have been known as Philip Serven, married to Katrina Stypers [this is a variant of Maria Catharina Steibers] (who died 9 Aug 1768), resided in Commune of Munster in Holland; child Johan Jeurrien Serven born 23 Dec 1717 [this is Johann George]

Palatine Families of New York, Hank Jones:
Philipp Zerbe made his first appearance on the Hunter Lists 4 August 1710 with 2 pers. over 10 yrs. The household was registered with 2 over 10 yrs. and 1 under 10 on 24 June 1712. Jno. Phill Zerbe of Annsberg was a soldier in 1711 (Palatine Volunteers To Canada). philip Serves was in Captyn Cornelis Haring's Company of Orange Co. Militia 25 Oct 1715 (Report of the State Historiam, Vol. I, p 480). He sponsored Reinhard Haus at Hackinsack in 1722 (NY City Lutheran Chbk). (Johann) Georg was also known as: Johann Jeurrien, John Yeury and Uri and known spellings for his last name were Zerbe, Servey, Serven and Servis.

[NI07757] [Zerbe to merge.FTW]

There is a biography starting on p.250 in the Schuylkill Blue Book. He was at the center of the "Tulpehocken Confusion" at Zion's church, Stouchsburg (apparently between Moravian and Orthodox Lutherans).

[NI07759] The Palatine Families of New York, Hank Jones, p 1137:
Johann Jacob Zerbe was confirmed 23 March 1712 at at Queensburg (West Camp Luthern Chbk). Johan Jacob Server was naturalized 17 Jan 1715/16 (Albany Nats). Jacob Zerben and his wife Maria Catharina were listed next to Martin Zerber (and two names from Heinrich Winter) at Wormsdorff ca. 1716/17 (Simmendinger Register). Jacob Server was a Palatine Debtor in 1722 (Livingston Debt Lists). He was on the Tulpehocken Church lists of 1743. The will of Jacob Zerbe of Bethel was dated 13 Aug 1776 and probated 19 March 1782 (Berks Co. Will Bk A, p 40). Johann Jacob married Maria Catharina (probably Winter - HJ).

[NI07770] This is the man whose signature on an early document was mistakenly interpreted as Lorentz Zerbe. The signature has been printed (as I recall seeing in various places) as Torritine Serbo and Loritine Serbo. From what I have seen of early script, I can see how the "M" could have been misread. Unfortunately, early publications of this list (a petition for a road, I believe) did not take into account the registers and ship lists, and the name went into the history books as Lorentz Zerbe. Each new Zerbe descendant/researcher comes upon this dilemma: was it Lorentz or Martin? The source of the name Lorentz was singularly the signature on this petition. Hank Jones has thoroughly researched the registers and lists available to us and concludes that "Lorentz" was in fact Martin. Those interested should look up his article referenced below.

In 1709, Johann Martin Zerbe, a Huguenot, with his own family, and his brother, Johann Philip Zerbe, were part of the Palatine migration from Rotterdam, Netherlands. They camped near London, England, then sailed for New York on Christmas Eve, 1709, the Fourth Party (among the Palatinates on ten ships which left London Dec 24, 1709). They arrived in New York in June13, 1710, eighteen months since they had embarked from Rotterdam and even longer since they had left Kettenbach. They settled in Livingston Manor (Columbia) and the Schoharie Valley of New York.

Martin and Philip both joined the expedition against Quebec, Canada, July 26, 1711 in Queen Anne's War as volunteers from Annesburg (NY, one of the naval stores' settlements).

The lands in New York were not legally secured and the 33 Palatine families, guided by friendly Indians, in 1723, set out for Pennsylvania. They came to the Tulpehocken region with the 33 families that had settled in the Schoharie Valley in 1713, coming overland to this state in 1723 from NY. Settled in 1723 on Fells Manor, Chester County, now Host's Post Office, Berks County.

[Apparently they did not move to Schoharie, as Ulrich Simmendinger's Register in 1717 lists Martin and wife with four children at Wormsdorff; Wormsdorff is the village of Annsbury in the East Camp on the land purchased from Robert Livingston for the naval stores project. Lutheran Pastor Joshua Kocherthal ministered to the family and specifically records that Anna Elizabeth received communion at Queensburg in Livingston Manor 25 Oct 1713.]

Martin Zerbe was one of the fifteen signers for the land in the William Penn grant. In 1732 they were able to get clear titles to the land. Martin Zerbe settled on the tract of Fell's Manor along Tulpehocken Creek crossing a run called Martin Sharva's Run, in Chester County, now Host's Post Office, Berks County PA, and known as "Schaffner's." Fell's Manor was transferred from Chester County to Lancaster County, 1729. This land is also known as the Muhlbach (Mill Creek). Martin Zerbe was a signer to a petition to build a road from the Lutheran Church in Tulpehocken, Stouchsburg, to the Quaker Meeting House in Oley Township. John Zerbe was a signer for Christ Church, 1743. The death records of Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchburg, lists Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Zerbe, wife of Martin Zerbe, July 22, 1750. The Zerbes were Lutheran vine dressers and husbandmen, millers, and fruit culturists.

Article by Henry Z. Jones, Jr. entitled "Finding the Ancestral Home of a Palatine Forefather: The Case of Martin Zerbe," published in The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Vol. XXIX, No. 2, pp 129-132:

"...The original, mss. Rotterdam [Embarkation] Lists (unlike published versions such as in Knittle) were broken down into the individual shiploads of immigrants within each "party." Martin Zerbe was listed near Georg Volpert Schmidt, Nicholas Michel and Henrich Bartel not only on one of the small ships sailing from Rotterdam in the 4th party ("Johann Martin Zerber & Wife, 4 children"), but also near them in the 4th arrivals encamped at London ("Martin Zerbst, 34, and wife, sons aged 11, 8, 4, and 2, Lutheran, Husbandman and Vine dresser"). Schmidt, Michel and Bartel all settled in New York: Bartel's home was named in Kocherthal as "Epstein, Duchy of Darmstadt," which is Eppstein, an area near Wiesbaden."

"...A 'Phillip Zerber' was found on the original Rotterdam Lists near Martin and also on the London Lists ("Phillip Zerbst, 25, Lutheran, Figure maker"). It was noted that the Kocherthal records [records in the USA showing early immigrants] show a "Johann Philipp Zerb of Kettenbach, commune of Minster" who was married to a "Maria Catharina Steiber of the commune of Hachenburg" on 9 Jul 1710. Maps showed that Kettenbach was north of Wiesbaden, near a town of Munster and but a few miles away from Eppstein. To cement the Bartel-Zerbe connection begun in Germany, Henrich Bartel appears near Martin Zerbe in the unalphabetized Hunter Subsistence Lists, and one "Maria Margaretha Barthel" sponsored Martin Zerbe's daughter baptized in 1715 by Rev. Kocherthal. Neighbors remained neighbors, even surviving a trip across the ocean."

"...That the ages of Martin Zerbe and his brother Johann Philipp Zerbe [on the Kettenbach church records] should be slightly different from those given on the London Lists is not surprising: the London Lists were somewhat erratic, sometimes agreeing to the month with German church books, ages given in lists of Palatines remaining in New York City in 1710-11, and American burial records, and other times being off by as much as thirteen years."

"Johann Martin Zirbe was confirmed at Kettenbach in 1682. He is listed as a communicant there in 1686, 1687, 1690, 1692, and 1693. On 11 Feb 1697 the marriage of Johan Martin Zirben to Anna Elisabeth, daughter of the late Johannes Jungel from the oil mill, was recorded."

Also from Hank Jones:
"...The Rotterdam and London Lists show Martin Zerbe emigrating with four children, while the Kettenbach church books record six children being baptized, with one buried. The burial of the missing child probably went unrecorded at Kettenbach, as my investigator there reported that the Kettenbach church books, 1643-1765, were 'very defective with gaps in the records'."

"Martin Zerbe was enrolled on the Hunter Subsistence Lists for the period 1710-1712. He was 'of Annsberg' when a Palatine volunteer in the Canadian expedition of 1711. 'Marte Server' was naturalized at Albany on 17 Jan 1715/16. The Simmendinger Register, published in 1717 but actually drawn up as early as late 1715, calls him of Wormsdorff with four children and wife Maria Catharine: it seems that Simmendinger erred in Martin's wife's name being Maria Catharine and probably mixed her up with his son Jacob Zerbe's wife of the same name. He appears on several of the "Palatine Debtors Lists" found in the Livingston Papers, the last entry being in February 1722 after which Martin Zerbe and his family removed to Tulpehocken. Anna Elizabeth Zerbe, wife of Martin, died 22 Jul 1750, according to the Records of Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchsburg, Pa."

[NI07771] Fragmented records of the Zirbe/Zerbe family begin in Kettenbach, Germany in 1643. It is legendary (sic) that the family is of French origin, being natives of France and moving from Lorraine to Switzerland, and later to the Palatine after the Edict of Nantes was revoked.

[NI07774] There is some biography on him on p. 204 of the Blue Book. It lists his children but doesn't say which wife was the mother. Since Elizabeth Maria died about 1749 and he was 60 then, it is assumed that all children were hers.

[NI07813] Schuylkill Blue Book says 1790 census shows him with 7 children and lived in Pinegrove Twp. and later returned to Berks Co. All children migrated west. Came over the Blue Mountain about 1780 and settled in Pinegrove, the locality afterward included in Manheim.

1790 census shows he has 7 children.

[NI07814] Schuylkill Blue Book has considerable information about John George starting on p 217. Birth date of Apr 24, 1750 must be in error, as his sister Maria Catharina was born June 5, 1750.

[NI07849] From Biographies of Allen County, Ohio residents, under Samuel O. Ridenour:
The Ridenour family is of German extraction and was established in America by Lewis Ridenour, the great-grandfather of our subject. He came to the Colonies prior to the American Revolution and assisted the Patriot Army in the capacity of a teamster. He first settled in Virginia, whence he removed to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and there engaged in farming until 1803, when he migrated to Ohio. He settled in Perry County, being accompanied by his wife and 10 children. He had seven sons and three daughters. His sons, all of whom served in the war of 1812, were as follows: Mathias, David, John, Jacob, Lewis, Isaac and Martin. Of these, David, John and Isaac came to Allen County and all settled in Perry township. David never married, but John and Isaac both reared families and their descendants to-day are numbered with the most prominent and reliable citizens of their various communities.

[NI07853] Served in the War of 1812.

498 - Cyrus Wingate, 23, born Ohio; Mary, 19

Ward Cem., old section, gives his name as Isaac B. (I had Isaac R.) which makes more sense since his mother was Beddles. Says his wife Ursula was his second wife.

[NI07854] 1790 PA Heads of Families, p 285 in York County (Huntington, Manallen, Manheim and Tyrone Twps) lists Nicholas Shuster with 1 female (probably his wife). I think this is Margarat's father.

[NI07857] Ludiwick Mahaman is listed in the 1790 PA census in Bedford County, 1 male over 16, 4 males under 16, 5 females. I am guessing that this is the father of the two Maughiman men who married Shusters. There was no other name at all similar to Maughiman in the 1790 census.

[NI07875] Reasons this is not Susanna daughter of Johanne George Henninger and Catherine Levan (information on these Henningers comes from the Chiocchi Database, http://pages.prodigy.net/janetch/family.htm): (1) Susanna is named first in her mother's will, which would indicate she may be the eldest. The third mentioned, Christian, was born in 1767. (2) Susanna would have been married to Jacob Zerbe by the time of her mother's will, and so would have been named as Susanna Zerbe, her married name, as her married sisters were named.

Lima News, July 23, 1958 -- Former Railroad Worker Constructs, Collects Toys, with picture captioned "Ralph Frederick and Toys"
Dola -- Ralph Frederick of Dola, a retired Pennsylvania railroad employee, spends his leisure hours creating handmade toys for his grandchildren and for his own collection.
Frederick began producing these carefully made toys several years ago in order to fill in spare time. He precision-makes each part and when making miniature horses and wagons he carves each tiny wheel spoke and assembles every harness with small strips of leather. He agrees that it often proves difficult to form a six-horse hitch or to paint the intricate parts of the wagon but the finished product is a sufficient reward for his efforts.
Gardening and fishing also belong to Frederick's hobby list but toy making dominates in the winter because of weather conditions. The experienced railroader had been with the Pennsylvania Railroad since 1905 and continued until 1953. At the age of 21 Frederick was made track foreman. He recalls helping to install and , in recent years, helping to tear out the track pans at Dola. (The pans permitted trains to pick up water on the run and when they and the coal docks were still in use numerous trains passed through Dola in just a day's time.)
Frederick is 72 and has been married to his wife Hazel for 48 years, the same amount of time he was with the railroad company. Both have lifetime passes on the railroad but as yet have not found time to use them. The couple has thirteen children: Mrs. Audrey Hunt, Lima; Mrs. Thelma Sherman, Kenton; Mrs. Maxine Williams, Marion; Charles Frederick, Hastings, Mich.; William Frederick, Mt. Vernon; Robert Frederick, Dunkirk; Mrs. Bette Amstutz, Kenton; Mrs. Janice Mankey, Ada; William Kahler, Dola; and Gene Frederick, Dola.
