[NI12207] Lima News, probably in 1958 -- June Augsburger Finds ... Collecting Hankies Hobby And Aid To Health, with picture captioned "Handkerchief collector Miss June Augsburger, 1723 Homeward Ave., is seen amidst the 650 items in her collection. June, who has been in ill health for many years, started her hobby in 1943."
There's probably not a woman anywhere who hasn't at one birthday or another received a handkerchief as a gift. But very few anywhere in the world can boast of receiving 650 of them--all as gifts.
That's part of the story behind the imposing hanky array in the accompanying photo of Miss June Augsburger, 1723 Homeward Ave., as of today--she received two in the mail this morning--has been given 650 of the dainty squares from as many friends, relatives, acquaintances, even strangers.
"I started my collection in 1943," June said. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Augsburger, happened on a handkerchief as a Christmas gift. "The following holidays, such as Easter, Valentine's Day, etc., I received other hankies," she added. Finally in 1945 June decided to make collecting the squares her hobby. Actually, the handkerchiefs have worked as wonderful physical and mental therapy for June, who has been in ill health for the past 23 years--ever since she suffered a back injury while in school. For periods where she must remain indoors or for the long days in hospital beds, June works on her collections. Each of the handkerchiefs is a story which she has recorded in a special notebook.
"My collection includes hankies from every state of the Union and from Washington, D.C. Pictures of famous buildings of the states are imprinted on them, she said. "I have received handkerchiefs from 28 countries of the world. While at Henry Ford Hospital, I was treated by a Brazilian physician who sent me one upon his return to Brazil," June said. One of her school friend's mother, a native of Germany, mailed June a hanky from there while there on a visit. A Van Wert friend's friend sent her a lovely hanky from Bethleham, Jerusalem, and a Fort Jennings school teacher's cousin in England sent June a hanky imprinted with the Queen's crest. U.S. Servicemen in Ireland, Japan, Hawaii, Korea, Iceland, Belgian and France have remembered June with handmade squares, delicately embroidered, crocheted and tatted.
Cotton, pongee, linen, silk, lace and nylon, in every color imaginable--all are included in her collection. June particularly is fond of the foreign handkerchiefs with hand-rolled hems. She also treasures the handkerchiefs presented her by her two-year-old niece, Lynne Faunce, and her 87-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Louella Miller.
Oddly enough, June has never used any of the 650. And they've never been laundered. When the hankies are not on display, June packs them in boxes, careful to maintain their original crease.
