Biographies of Allen County, Ohio residents:
JACOB HEFNER, who is one of the most extensive agriculturists of this county, owning 365 acres of land in sections 19, 20, 21 and 22, Jackson township, was born in Ross County, this State, April 22, 1832. His parents were Isaac and Mary (May) Hefner, both natives of Pennsylvania, where the former was born in 1809, and the latter in 1807. They were of Pennsylvania-Dutch ancestry.
When a young man, Isaac Hefner accompanied his parents to Ross County, Ohio, making the journey overland by wagon. There he married and lived until 1840, when with his wife and family, he came to Allen County. Here he entered 80 acres of land from the government, and began to buy and feed cattle, which were disposed of at a good price, the proceeds going to buy more cheap land. Thus, in time, he became one of the largest land-owners of this county, owning eventually about 1,800 acres. Large tracts of this land were cleared by him and his sons. He was a Democrat in politics, and in religion a member of the Reformed Church, donating timber and land for the first log church built here and lending substantial aid toward the erection of the present brick edifice. The land used by the church as a cemetery was also given by him. He passed away in 1884, at the age of 75 years. His wife died in 1901, at the advanced age of 94. The children were: Jacob; Harrison, whose sketch may be found in this book; Amos, of Auglaize Township; Clarissa, who married Jacob Mowery; David; John; and Albert.
Jacob Hefner was reared to farm life and lived at home until his marriage, when he moved into the log cabin which stood on his present farm, at that time the property of his father. Here he applied himself to farming and stock raising, and soon had his property cleared and in a high state of cultivation. His residence is of brick and one of the most attractive in the vicinity, while the large barns and other outbuildings bespeak the prosperous farmer.
Mr. Hefner was married December 2, 1855, to Christina Holman, who was born near Delaware, Ohio, September 18, 1838, and died September 10, 1898. She was a daughter of William and Sarah (Frederick) Holman. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Hefner are as follows: Isaac, born March 25, 1858, a resident of Lima; Mary, born April 7, 1860, the wife of Marion Watt; William, born February 23, 1862, living in Lima; Jennie, born September 12, 1864, wife of John E. Eversole; Amos, born February 16, 1867; Walter, born July 6, 1869; Olive, born August 14, 1872, and deceased December 8, 1874; Clara, born October 19, 1875, wife of C. C. Arnold; Daisy, born June 17, 1878, who married E. N. Hall, and lives in the Indian Territory; and Marion, born July 5, 1881, who married Bessie Kidd and resides on the farm with his father. Mr. Hefner has always affiliated with the Democratic Party, and at one time served as township trustee. He is a member of the Reformed Church. Portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Hefner accompany this sketch.

Biographies of Allen County, Ohio residents (under Harison Hefner):
When a young man Isaac Hefner located in Ross County with his parents being among its first white settlers. There he married Mary May. When he came to Allen County with his wife and children in 1840, he was a poor man, and could neither read nor write; but he possessed a shrewd business sense which enabled him to see and take advantage of the opportunities offered and which placed him among the leading men of his time and section. On coming to this county, he entered 80 acres of land from the government and dealt extensively in cattle. He added to his acreage from time to time until he became a very large land owner. He possessed at the time of his death about 1800 acres all of the land being in Bath and Jackson townships. He was a Democrat, but did not take an active part in politics. He was a member and liberal supporter of the Reformed Church, furnishing the timber for the erection of the first log church which was built. Later he donated the land when the present edifice was erected for both church and cemetery, and contributed to the building fund for the brick church. He passed away in 1884 at the age of 75 years. His wife survived him many years, dying in 1901 at the advanced age of 94 years. Two of their nine children died in infancy. The seven who grew to maturity and are still living are as follows: Jacob, of Jackson township, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this work; Harison; Amos, of Auglaize township; Clarissa, wife of Jacob Mowery, of Bath township; David, of Bath township; and John and Albert, of Jackson township.

Davis's first Emigrants book said that Barbara Wissler daughter of Heinrich Wissler was probably the Barbara Wisler who married Martin Amweg. In his most recent publication (internet site), he gives another Barbara, [?] daughter of Benedict, as the one who married Martin Amweg (? indicates a tentative, unconfirmed relationship). Barbara and her [?] brother Heinrich arrived in Philadelphia on the ship St. Andrew in 1737 with Martin Amweg.
Davis does not have Benedict Wissler connected to Ulrich Wissler's family. Ulrich was the tentative common ancestor for Phil and me - that's no longer the case, unless and until Davis makes a connection between the Benedict and Ulrich. (March 2003)

On December 10th, 1894, he was married to Elva Moon Lillie at the home of Fred Brewster, Esq., in East Monroe. For the past thirteen years Mr. and Mrs. Scribner have lived with the latter's mother Mrs. C. A. Moon, between Bushnell and this place.
The community has lost a good citizen, whose kindly face and genial hospitality will be missed by many friends and neighbors. Rev. R. E. Benjamin spoke words of comfort to the widow, sister and brothers. Many floral tributes gave silent testimony of respect. Interment was made at Kelloggsville.
Mrs. Elva Scribner wishes to thank all the friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted her during the illness and death of her husband.

2124 - Conrad Lickliter, 63, farmer, value of real estate owned: 2000, born Md.; Amy, 47, born Pa.; Ruth, 14, born Ohio; (cont. on page 255a) Christian Lickliter, 12; Ezra, 10, Steel S., 8; Martha, 6; Andrew, 4
2125 - Geo. W. Lickliter, 24, farmer, born Ohio; Catherine, 24
Conrad Lichliter was born Jul 20, 1787 in Frederick MD, died Feb 29, 1851 Belmont Co OH. He md. 1st Alice "Ally" Patterson, Dec. 24, 1812 in Frederick MD. She was born Aug 10, 1792, died Jul 23, 1833 in Belmont Co. Conrad md. 2nd Amy Wilkinson, Jan. 7, 1835 Belmont Co. She was born 1803 in PA. Children were Ruth born Dec 24, 1835; Christian Baker Lechliter born Dec 29, 1836; Azariah born Oct 3, 1838; Nathaniel Steel born Dec 29, 1840; Martha Rebecca born Aug 15, 1842; Andrew Jackson born Aug 15, 1845.
The Ancestry database (Gregory Shoults) doesn't have anything further on the Christian Baker who married Elizabeth Lechliter, but this 1850 census record is clearly the Maryland Christian Baker. Elizabeth may have died by 1850 and Christian remarried Rhoda. Note: William Baker born abt 1820 (in the 1850 census, above) named a daughter Rhoda. That indicates a connection between Christian and William. William is the voucher for Sarah's marriage to Ezekiel Smith - it's possible that Sarah and William were siblings, children of Christian's, and that Joel was a nephew. 1850 census says William was born in Maryland, Sarah in Ohio, so the family would have immigrated between 1820 and 1824.
Ezekiel and Sarah A. Smith are found in the 1850 Ohio census - Belmont Co, Goshen Twp (roll 661), p. 435B, taken Aug. 23, 1850:

1860 Ohio census - Belmont Co, Smith Twp (roll 937), PO Centerville, p. 302B, enumerated Sept. 6, 1860:
1663 / 1619 - Christian Baker, 64, farmer, value of real estate: 1000, of personal estate: 50, born MD (it kind of looks like NC but I'm pretty sure it's Maryland); Sarah A. Smith, 36, born Ohio; Hester A. Smith, 9; Mary J. Smith, 5
[Sarah Ann Baker md. Ezekiel Smith on Nov. 15, 1849. Belmont County Marriages, Book 7, 1844-1849, p. 421: Smith, Ezekiel & Baker, Sarah Ann on 15 Nov 1849 by John Twinum JP; vo-William Baker. Probably Ezekiel died by 1860.]
1664 / 1620 (next household) - Joel Baker, 25; Lydia, 24; George R., 1
I'm not sure if this is the same Christian Baker as above. It's the right area - Smith Twp - but different people in the household.

John was the son of Daniel Price and Elizabeth Hussey. No relation to the Bakers, but the fact that he was born in Baltimore may be an indication that Benjamin Baker also came from Baltimore. The Hussey family was involved with the Quakers.
1860 Indiana census - Brown Co, Washington Twp (roll 246), PO Nashville & Mt. Liberty, taken June 28, 1860, p. 62:

Rachel Jane Baker having an illicit connection with Sanson Shrock, he ran away and she applied to me to find him for her. I heard of his being in Pennsylvania. I immediately address a letter to Robert Hamilton. His Reply:
Mr. N.J.Kinney. Sir I receive your line on the 19th day and as to answer your request concerning Sanson Shrock, I am acquainted with the man perfectly and see him every day as he works in the village I live in and he had been working for me since he came from Ohio and his brother is living in this town and by me giving you this information would give me a great deal of ill will. So do me the favor not to disclose on me that I gave you the information.

I think Wilkerson may be Wilkinson, as there are a number of Wilkinson families in Smith Twp but no Wilkersons. I think it's possible that Abigail is a daughter of Thomas Wilkinson and sister of Vincent Wilkinson who married Sarah Beckett. In the 1830 census, p. 377a, there is one female 10-15 in the household of Thomas Wilkinson, also one female 10-15 in the household of John Wilkinson, same page. Joel Wilkinson, p. 373a, also has one female age 10-15. She is possibly also the sister of Amy Wilkinson who married Conrad Lickliter in 1835.
However, there are several Wilkerson families in the 1850 census for Brown Co IN. What if Benjamin and Abigail moved there because she had relatives there?
